Our 3rd HelpX Place: Beerburrum – Doug, Wayne, Indie and Bonsai! :) - english version

Marleen, Indie, Wayne, Doug and Fabio.
It was just amazing to stay with Doug and Wayne. A gay couple, they just always have a good time. Indie, the dog, and Bonsai, the cat, completed the family and we were for 2,5 weeks a part of this family. Almost every evening we sat together and had dinner and/or watch tv. Or friends of them stayed at their place, than we talked and had a lot fun for the whole evening/night. :) Even we got to know the sister of Doug and her two daughters! Doug and Wayne do what they want. They don´t throw all their plans for HelpX, NO, quite the opposite, you share their live and catch terrific impressions of the australian lifestyle :)

Location: Distance to the next train station 10 min, to the next bigger village “Caloundra” 15-20 min by car. To Brisbane around 1 hour by train. So once again, we were far away from everything! :D

Accommodation: A super renovated caravan with a double bed, shower and we had our own toilet. The caravan stand closed to their house. But most of the time we spent with Doug (Wayne was the whole day working) in the house or around.

The work: We started at 8:30am and worked till 4pm. Easy going work and it was always very funny. We had to work one “full day” to get a day off. But in this 7,5 hrs we would have three brakes! :D Midmorning tea, Lunch and afternoon coffee!

Even in the first days a friend of them stayed there, Dom, end of 30 age, primary school teacher and very crazy! Simply funny! :) He supported us at work.

Next our activities:
Feed the fish, clean the filters.  Pluck weed out of the grow tube and shield the lettuce from the aphids.  We cleaned the yard, mowed the lawn and begun building a small herbs garden. Once Fabio helped catching the fish.

Work

Food: For breakfast we had sandwich or cereals, we were allowed to take what we wanted. :) For lunch we would mostly have sandwiches too or leftovers from the day before. :)  For dinner usually Doug was cooking, he is just a great cook. Every now and again Fabio was cooking, as well. :) Sometimes we had some wine or beer! Just delicious!

Leisure-time activity:

Steve Irwin Zoo: We did a day tour to the Steve Irwin Zoo, just fantastic. Different to the german petting zoos we all know, here you could pet kangaroos! :)  Actually our plan was, to take a photo with a koala, but they just took money for everything! So, we had plan b, taking a photo with the staff, who was holding the koala!

Glashouse Mountains: One morning we drove to the Glashouse Mountains. Doug intended bringing us both to the top of the mountain, but only Fabio made it. And Doug of course. :) To climb an unsecured and very high mountain is not for everyone. And so Marleen waited half way up on a big ledge. Safe and sound.

Brisbane: One weekend we drove to Brisbane by train. We watched the fireworks of the Brisbane River Festival. Just amazing!! Before the firework started there were flying army helicopters and jet fighter above our heads. The firework and the laser show went on for 30 minutes and it was lit from a platform floating on the river and off some high buildings close to the river.
Afterwards we went to the pub for one drink. There we saw a small and cute possum.  Not shy at all, only looking for chips and other delicious things! :D

Brisbane

Quad driving: With 40 km/h across the forest and Indie was very fast too!! :)

Splashing: They have the biggest pool we have ever seen in a garden!!

Playstation: Alternating Doug and Fabio were playing civilisation on the playsi3! :D

Walking:  When Doug did his grocery shopping, we went with him and walked through coles or the shopping mall! :)

Indie: We had to throw the ball 100 times and pet her all day :)

Evening activities: Watch TV and/or pet the belly of Indie the whole night:

chilling and friends

They are just lovely guys. We never felt like stranger. At all times we felt like a part of the family. We will never forget Indie and Bonsai!!!  And we will also never forget the funny evenings.

They taught Marleen the right pronunciation of “rain”. Because everytime it sounded like Wayne – do the lion! :D

We saw snakes and a many spiders!!  Plus toads and frogs. :) And the poo of some wild horses.
